Pierre Girgis, a dual Egyptian-U.S. citizen, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for failing to label information as 'political propaganda' under U.S. law. Initial felony charges accusing him of working as an unregistered agent for Egypt have been dropped. Girgis faces up to six months in prison.
Pierre Girgis, a New York finance professional, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor on Wednesday, admitting to sharing information from the Egyptian government without proper labeling required by U.S. law.
The case originally included more severe felony charges, which accused Girgis of acting as an unregistered agent for Egypt by monitoring U.S.-based critics of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and facilitating police training for Egyptian officials.
As part of a plea deal, these charges were dropped. Girgis, who now acknowledges his legal mistake, could face up to six months in prison during his October sentencing.
