Unidentified attackers entered the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises shortly after midnight on Thursday, causing significant damage to the facility where a woman doctor's body was found last week, according to police reports.
The violent incident unfolded during ongoing protests by women against the gruesome rape and murder of the doctor. Disguised as protestors, the assailants vandalized hospital property and hurled stones at police officers. Additionally, a police vehicle and several two-wheelers at the scene were damaged.
Several police officers sustained injuries in the violence. 'We have an adequate number of personnel posted outside the hospital, and they have been instructed to manage the situation accordingly,' a senior officer of Kolkata Police told PTI. Prompted by the 'Reclaim the Night' campaign, protests began at 11:55 pm, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations, spreading across key areas in both small towns and big cities, including significant landmarks in Kolkata.
The body of the woman postgraduate trainee was discovered inside a seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. A civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the crime. In response, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the case from Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday.
