Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Foxconn Chairman Young Liu to discuss investment plans amid an ongoing investigation into Foxconn's hiring practices in India. Modi emphasized India's opportunities in futuristic sectors and the expansion of Foxconn's operations, while the investigation's findings remain undisclosed.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foxconn Chairman Young Liu met to discuss the latter's investment plans in India on Wednesday. This meeting follows an investigation into potential discriminatory hiring practices at a Foxconn plant in India.
Modi highlighted India's promising prospects in futuristic sectors during the meeting, as shared in his post on the social media platform X. He mentioned that they had productive talks about Foxconn's investment intentions in Indian states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.
Foxconn's iPhone factory and Apple's wider supply chain expansion in India is seen by Modi as a significant economic opportunity. A previous Reuters investigation revealed Foxconn's exclusion of married women from assembly jobs in Tamil Nadu, a claim that Foxconn has contested while admitting some recruitment lapses in 2022. Foxconn has a significant presence in India, manufacturing iPhones and other smartphone products, and plans to venture into AirPods and chipmaking. However, it withdrew from a $19.5 billion semiconductor joint venture with Vedanta last July.
