During a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, revealed that the power grid is set to be significantly strengthened, with generating units expected to return online by the end of August.

Dr. Ramokgopa announced that Medupi Unit 4 and Kusile Unit 6 are anticipated to contribute an additional 800MW each, totaling 1,600MW. He also expressed optimism about extending the operational life of Koeberg Unit 2, which could add another 980MW to the grid.

“We are expecting to see an additional 2,500MW from the Eskom fleet alone by the end of August,” Dr. Ramokgopa said.

Despite this progress, the Minister warned that load shedding is not yet a thing of the past. He urged caution, stating that although Eskom’s performance is improving, load shedding might continue. “We remain buoyant about Eskom’s performance, but it is important not to declare load shedding as completely over. Eskom will provide a summer outlook in the coming weeks, and while we are hopeful, we must be realistic about the ongoing challenges,” he cautioned.

Dr. Ramokgopa highlighted improvements at several key power stations:

Tutuka Power Station: There has been a notable reduction in the unplanned capacity loss factor (UCLF) from 2,411MW to 949MW, reflecting a 29% improvement since March.

Kendal Power Station: Interventions to address emissions standards issues have reduced the UCLF from 2,500MW to approximately 919MW.

Kriel Power Station: The UCLF has decreased by 53%, from 1,400MW to about 508MW, showing exceptional results.

The Minister attributed these improvements to changes in leadership at these stations, emphasizing that experienced and committed individuals have been crucial in achieving these results. “The right leadership has made a significant difference in improving performance at these power stations,” Dr. Ramokgopa noted.

Overall, the Minister's update reflects a positive shift in Eskom’s power generation capabilities, although he stressed the need for continued vigilance and realistic expectations regarding load shedding.
