British water companies that fail their customers will face stricter regulations and higher compensation penalties, as announced by the government on Monday. The proposals suggest doubling compensation where companies fail to meet key legal standards, including notice of supply interruptions and missed appointments.

Subject to an eight-week consultation, these measures would also broaden the scenarios requiring compensation, such as automatic payments for boil notices. 'Our water industry is broken,' stated environment minister Steve Reed, emphasizing years of neglect by profit-driven companies.

Increasing rainfall from climate change, under-investment, and a growing population have put immense pressure on the water industry, leading to public outcry over issues like sewage in rivers and seas. In response, the Environment Agency recently highlighted significant failings across most companies and pledged stricter oversight.

'Demanding higher service standards and improving compensation will incentivize companies to do right by their customers,' added Jenny Suggate from the Consumer Council for Water.
