Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar assumed command of the Indian Army's elite Spear Corps on Saturday, taking on the formidable challenge of managing ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, which has resulted in over 200 deaths in the past year.

Pendharkar, who succeeds Lieutenant General Harjeet Singh Sahi now assigned as the commandant of the Army War College in Mhow, brings extensive experience from an illustrious career spanning over 34 years.

Commissioned into the Assam Regiment in 1990, Pendharkar's career includes stints in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and commanding formations along the Line of Control. He was previously the Director General of the Territorial Army and has held key staff appointments, including at the Military Operations Directorate at Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army). His academic achievements include attending prestigious military courses at the Defence Services Staff College, the Army War College, and the National Defence College.
