Amid fears of an influx of people following the political unrest in Bangladesh, the villagers of Lyngkhong in Meghalaya are reinforcing their bamboo fence and maintaining a night vigil to safeguard their homes. The border village, located mere meters from Bangladesh, has long struggled with issues regarding demarcation and border security.
The residents originally erected a bamboo fence during the COVID-19 pandemic to thwart petty crimes but are now reinforcing it to prepare for more significant threats. Although there have not been any serious incidents since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, villagers remain anxious, relying on increased vigilance from the BSF.
Negotiations between Indian and Bangladeshi authorities aim to extend a barbed wire fence to Lyngkhong to ensure better security, but the approval process is cumbersome. Meanwhile, villagers live in a state of constant vigilance, urging their government to expedite measures for their protection.
