Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday requested financial assistance from the Central government to aid in the rehabilitation of people affected by the recent massive landslides in Wayanad. He also called for support to tackle the mounting challenges of climate change.
The Chief Minister presented the state's demands to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the disaster-stricken hamlets. Vijayan detailed the intensity and impact of the calamity, providing a comprehensive report on the state's dire situation, as noted in a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
The CM highlighted that the state requires modern systems for weather monitoring and high-resolution hazard assessment tools. He also emphasized the need to boost the research capacity of the Institute of Climate Change Studies in Kottayam, with support from the Central government. Moreover, Vijayan urged that the landslides be declared a national calamity given their unprecedented scale.
