T V Somanathan Appointed New Cabinet Secretary for Two-Year Tenure
T V Somanathan has been named the new cabinet secretary for a two-year term starting August 30, 2024, succeeding Rajeev Gauba. Somanathan, a 1987 batch IAS officer with experience in the PMO and as finance secretary, brings extensive expertise to the role.

In a significant development, the Centre has appointed Finance Secretary T V Somanathan as the new cabinet secretary for a tenure of two years.
He will succeed Rajeev Gauba, who completes his five-year term at the end of this month. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Somanathan's appointment from August 30, 2024, as per an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
Somanathan, an experienced bureaucrat from the 1987 IAS batch, has served in various capacities, including joint secretary and additional secretary in the PMO, expenditure secretary, and finance secretary. He holds several degrees, including a PhD in economics and is fluent in five languages.
