In a significant move, the West Bengal government has decided to confer police medals upon four distinguished IPS officers, a senior official announced on Saturday. Among the awardees is Kolkata Police DCP Indira Mukherjee, who has recently been at the center of a controversy.
Mukherjee, heading the special inquiry team (SET) into molestation charges against Governor C V Ananda Bose, faced allegations from Raj Bhavan that the SET fabricated false charges against the governor. Despite these allegations, Mukherjee has been selected for the CM's medal for commendable service, alongside OSD Debajyoti Das from the CMO.
Also set to receive honors are Bidhananagar Police Commissioner Mukesh and DIG (Security) Avvaru Ravindranath, who will be awarded the CM's police medal for outstanding service. The Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that only the respective state government has the authority to take action against IPS officers working within the state.
