Next week, Agriculture and Trade Minister Todd McClay will embark on a visit to India focused on strengthening bilateral relationships, unlocking new opportunities, and promoting New Zealand businesses. This visit follows the recent State visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu.

“India is a key partner for New Zealand, and our Government is committed to enhancing this relationship,” Mr. McClay said. “We are aiming for deeper engagement across all aspects of our partnership, including food and fibre exports, which totaled $213 million last year.”

The Government has set an ambitious goal of doubling the value of exports within the next decade, with India’s vast market of 1.4 billion people being crucial to achieving this target. “Expanding our trade relationships will not only boost New Zealand’s economy but also increase incomes, lower living costs, and improve public services for Kiwis,” Mr. McClay added.

During his visit to Delhi, Mr. McClay is scheduled to meet with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, marking their fifth in-person meeting in nine months. He will also engage with Indian Ministers responsible for agriculture and primary industries.

“I look forward to discussing the full spectrum of our agricultural and trade relationship with India. We aim to identify areas for increased cooperation that will strengthen our food and fibre sectors and create commercial opportunities in both directions,” Mr. McClay said.

In Gujarat, Mr. McClay will connect with local and New Zealand businesses and meet with Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel. “I am eager to engage with businesses on the ground and explore opportunities to share insights and expertise across various sectors,” he noted.

“The relationship between New Zealand and India is warm and collaborative, and I am confident that both countries can build stronger food and fibre sectors, support commercial growth, and foster conditions that benefit both sides.”
