Colombian ELN Abides by Ceasefire Despite Expiration

The National Liberation Army (ELN) announced on Tuesday that it will not initiate attacks against Colombia's military, police, or security forces, even after the lapse of its ceasefire with the government.

In a statement, the leftist rebel group emphasized its commitment to peace, asserting, 'Within the framework of the desire for peace, the ELN will not carry out offensive operations against the military, police or security forces of the Colombian state.' However, they noted that they reserve the right to defend themselves if attacked.

On Monday, Colombian Defense Minister Ivan Velasquez indicated that the military would resume operations against the ELN following the end of a six-month ceasefire on Saturday. President Gustavo Petro's administration, Colombia's first left-wing government, has revived peace talks with the ELN to resolve a six-decade conflict that has resulted in over 450,000 deaths.
