French cyber crime police are currently investigating a ransomware attack that has struck the Grand Palais exhibition hall in Paris, a venue hosting Olympic events, including fencing and Taekwondo, according to Paris prosecutors.
Despite the cyber criminals targeting the exhibition hall's central computer system, the incident did not disrupt the ongoing Olympic events held in the iconic glass-roofed venue. The system also manages data for 40 smaller affiliate museums, the prosecutors revealed in an email.
Franceinfo radio reported that the attackers demanded a ransom within 48 hours, threatening to release financial data if their demand was not met. France's museums organization, 'Réunion des musées nationaux - Grand Palais,' confirmed that they have sought the assistance of the national cyber security agency ANSSI and noted no detected data extraction. Officials have assured that Olympic events are proceeding smoothly and the affiliated museums remain open to the public.
