The National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC) is calling on heritage practitioners, activists, and enthusiasts to apply for heritage funding by 30 August 2024. This initiative aims to support projects dedicated to preserving and promoting South Africa’s rich heritage.
As an entity under the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the NHC is tasked with safeguarding the country's diverse heritage. Dr. Thabo Manetsi, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NHC, emphasized the significance of heritage preservation in fostering nation building and social cohesion.
Eligible for funding are community-based projects that contribute to heritage preservation through documentation, research, and publication. This includes educational institutions, non-profit companies, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, associations, foundations (excluding family foundations), and Section 21 companies.
Dr. Manetsi highlighted that priority will be given to proposals focusing on:
Heritage research and publication
Documenting and training in heritage
Indigenous knowledge systems
Women and heritage
Youth and heritage
Education and heritage
Additionally, the NHC is interested in projects within the following key heritage disciplines:
Living Heritage
Cultural History and Heritage
Education and Training
The NHC also notes that organizations or individuals with active projects under the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) or previous NHC funding must submit their closing reports or end products before applying for new funding.
“Don’t delay—begin your application process and gather the necessary compliance documents promptly. Our teams are available to assist with the application process,” urged Dr. Manetsi.
