A New Zealand pilot was killed by separatist rebels in Indonesia's Papua region on Monday shortly after landing his helicopter in a remote area. Authorities confirmed that the other four passengers on board were safe.
The tragic event took place in Central Papua's Alama district. According to Bayu Suseno, spokesperson for joint Indonesian police-military operations, rebels rounded up the passengers immediately after landing. The motive is still unclear.
This incident follows the 18-month-long captivity of another New Zealand pilot, Phillip Mehrtens, also captured by Papuan rebels. The New Zealand government has continuously urged for Mehrtens' release. Although rebel spokesperson Sebby Sambom announced an agreement to free Mehrtens, Indonesian security officials remain skeptical.
