Ukraine Bolsters Naval Strength with Second Turkish-Built Corvette
Ukraine has received a second Turkish-built navy corvette amid ongoing conflict with Russia. Ukraine's first lady, Olena Zelenska, officiated the launch in Turkey. The new corvette will enhance Ukraine's maritime security in the Black, Azov, Mediterranean Seas, and the Atlantic Ocean. The navy continues to train a new crew for the vessel.
Ukraine has taken delivery of a second Turkish-built navy corvette, amid ongoing conflict with Russia. Officials did not disclose specific plans for the warships' use in the war.
Ukraine's first lady, Olena Zelenska, attended the launching ceremony of the Ada-class corvette during her visit to Turkey, announced the Ukrainian presidency.
The first corvette is undergoing sea trials, while Turkish Ada-class ships typically strike planes, ships, and submarines. Ukraine, having coastlines on the Black and Azov seas, had a small navy at the start of Russia's 2022 invasion. Now, uncrewed sea drones and new corvettes challenge Moscow's Black Sea naval capabilities.
The Ukrainian presidency said these corvettes will protect interests in multiple seas including the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. Next, the focus is on equipping the corvette with weapons systems and training a new crew of 100 men.
International law forbids warship passage through Turkey's Bosporus Strait during wartime, but the shipyard's location remains undisclosed, implying a possible direct route to Ukraine.
Ukraine ordered the ships under a 2020 agreement, aligning with its recent Maritime Security Strategy. Western allies, including the UK and Norway, are assisting in rebuilding Ukraine's naval strength.
