The police have invoked charges under the SC/ST Atrocities Act against Dawood Shaikh, accused of allegedly murdering a 20-year-old woman at Uran in Navi Mumbai, officials announced on Wednesday.
Apprehended from Shahapur area of Gulbarga in Karnataka on Tuesday morning, Shaikh was brought to Navi Mumbai the same night and is currently in police custody. A senior police official confirmed that the accused will be presented in court later in the day.
The victim's body was discovered early Saturday after a missing person's report was filed on July 25. An autopsy revealed multiple stab wounds as the cause of death. Initially, the police registered a case under section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against an unidentified suspect. Multiple teams were formed to trace Shaikh, who had been living in Uran and later moved to Karnataka. Police indicate that past arguments between the accused and the victim might have escalated to the fatal incident, although the investigation continues to probe the exact motive.
