The Tripura unit of the Congress has called for a judicial probe by a sitting High Court judge into the death of a student and the subsequent violence in Gandatwisa, Dhalai district.
Paremeshwar Reang, a 19-year-old college student, succumbed to injuries on July 12 following a clash on July 7, which led to widespread violence and left at least 40 families homeless, officials reported.
"A five-member team of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) visited Parameshwar Reang's house and other affected families to assess the situation," senior party MLA Sudip Roy Barman told reporters, emphasizing the need for a judicial investigation.
"Parameshwar was critically injured in the presence of police. Looting, rioting, and arson occurred despite police being on-site, necessitating a judicial probe," Barman stated.
The TPCC also advocates for permanent security camps in sensitive areas, a government job for Reang's family, and adequate compensation for the affected families. Barman criticized the current compensation, stating that only Rs 25,000 was provided to families whose homes were completely destroyed, and Rs 5 lakh to Reang's mother.
