Security Forces Protect Haitian PM Amid Hospital Gunfire
Security officers fired shots to ensure the safe exit of Haitian Prime Minister Gary Conille from a Port-au-Prince hospital. Conille was visiting the hospital with the national police chief and journalists when gunfire erupted. The hospital remains contested territory amidst gang violence in Haiti.
Security officers had to discharge their firearms Monday to secure the safe exit of Haitian Prime Minister Gary Conille from a hospital in Port-au-Prince, according to the prime minister's office.
Conille, accompanied by National Police Chief Normil Rameu and journalists, was visiting Haiti's largest hospital when gunshots were heard outside the building. The prime minister had just completed an interview at the time of the incident. Security agents fired a few shots as the group made their exit.
"The PM and his team left the hospital in complete safety and were escorted back to his office," read the statement. No injuries or fatalities were reported. The incident underscores ongoing violence in Haiti, where gangs have looted and destroyed medical facilities, and local authorities struggle to maintain order.
