A pro-democracy group reported that Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least 22 people in an attack on al-Fashir, Darfur. The RSF denied the assault. The attack reportedly involved artillery shells and drones, leading to 97 casualties. Over 300,000 people have been displaced due to ongoing conflicts.
A pro-democracy group reported that Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least 22 people in an attack on the city of al-Fashir in the western Darfur region on Saturday. The paramilitary force, however, denied launching the assault.
The al-Fashir Resistance Committees claimed on Facebook that the RSF had deployed artillery shells on markets, hospitals, and apartments, marking an escalation of violence after weeks of stalemate in the country's civil war. The activist group also alleged that the RSF used a drone to target a hospital.
The group later updated the casualty toll to 97 killed or injured. The RSF, however, refuted the report, asserting that it did not engage with the army or allied groups in al-Fashir.
As the national army's last stronghold in the Darfur region, al-Fashir is a crucial front in the war between the army and the RSF, which has spiraled Sudan into the world's worst humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations, more than 300,000 people have been displaced in al-Fashir due to the fighting that began in April.
