Sudan's Civil War Escalates: Deadly Attack on al-Fashir
A pro-democracy group has reported that Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least 22 people in an attack on al-Fashir in the Darfur region, an allegation denied by the RSF. The violence marks a significant surge in the country's ongoing civil war.
A pro-democracy group claimed that Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least 22 people during an assault on the city of al-Fashir in western Darfur on Saturday. However, the paramilitary force has denied launching any attacks.
The al-Fashir Resistance Committees reported on Facebook that the RSF fired artillery shells on markets, hospitals, and residential areas amid a surge in violence following a prolonged stalemate in the civil war. The group also accused the RSF of using a drone to target a hospital.
Thereafter, the group reported that a total of 97 people were either killed or injured in the conflict. The RSF, however, has refuted these claims, asserting that it did not engage in combat with the national army or allied forces in al-Fashir.
Al-Fashir remains the national army's last stronghold in the Darfur region and is a critical front in its ongoing conflict with the RSF. The civil war has plunged Sudan into a severe humanitarian crisis, with over 300,000 people fleeing their homes in al-Fashir since April, according to the United Nations.
