External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday emphasized the importance of developing a substantive and effective code of conduct to safeguard sea lines of communication in the South China Sea, highlighting their importance for the Indo-Pacific region's peace and stability amid China's increasing maritime coercion.

Addressing the 14th East Asia Summit in Vientiane, Laos, Jaishankar reiterated India's commitment to ASEAN unity and the Act East Policy. He noted that the EAS process, approaching its 20th year, stands to benefit from India's continued support.

Jaishankar also underscored the necessity of de-escalation and restraint in Gaza, expressed concern over attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, and reiterated India's call for dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the Ukraine conflict. Additionally, he mentioned India's contributions to the East Asia Summit Plan of Action and encouraged further participation in initiatives like the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
