Jaishankar Raises Trafficking Issue and Strengthens Ties in Laos
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone to discuss development cooperation and address the trafficking of Indian nationals through cyber scam centres. Jaishankar’s visit includes participation in ASEAN meetings and the exchange of MoUs for collaborative projects.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar raised the critical issue of trafficking of Indian nationals through cyber scam centres during his meeting with Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on Saturday. The dialogue, held in the capital of the Laos People's Democratic Republic, also covered development partnership and cooperation in sectors like defence and energy.
Jaishankar is in Laos to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meetings, engaging with fellow foreign ministers and leaders to strengthen bilateral ties. He expressed appreciation for the Lao PDR government's assistance in rescuing Indian citizens and highlighted the nations' shared civilisational connections.
Additionally, the Indian embassy in Laos has successfully rescued 13 Indians from cyber scamming centres. To further fortify relations, MoUs on 10 Quick Impact Projects under Mekong Ganga Cooperation were exchanged, and a special stamp set celebrating shared cultural heritage was unveiled.
