The Delhi High Court on Friday requested the city police to respond to Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra's plea seeking to quash an FIR filed against her for a derogatory social media comment about National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma.

Justice Neena Bansal Krishna has issued a notice to the Delhi Police, asking them to file a status report within four weeks. The high court has scheduled arguments regarding the FIR's legality on November 6.

The FIR, registered this month under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, focuses on insulting a woman's modesty. This is the first FIR under the BNS since its implementation on July 1. Moitra's now-deleted comment on a video involving NCW chief Sharma in Hathras led to the FIR, initiated by the NCW's complaint.
