UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has urgently called on the Bangladesh Government to disclose full details about last week’s violent crackdown on protests and ensure that all law enforcement operations adhere to international human rights standards.

Violent Crackdown:

Casualties and Injuries: Reports indicate that over 170 people were killed, more than a thousand were injured, and many are missing following protests against government policies. Among the deceased are at least two journalists, with many others injured or denied medical care. Hundreds of people, including opposition figures, have been arrested.

Violence and Internet Shutdown: Many people were reportedly subjected to violent attacks by groups affiliated with the Government, with no protection offered. The Government's decision to impose a prolonged Internet shutdown has been criticized for contravening international law and affecting various rights, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and access to health and education.

Calls for Action:

Restoring Internet Access: Türk emphasized the need for the Government to restore full Internet access to ensure freedom of communication for all, including journalists and media outlets. He also urged the Government to provide information about those killed, injured, or detained to their families.

Independent Investigation: The High Commissioner called for an impartial, independent, and transparent investigation into all alleged human rights violations, offering the support of his Office. He stressed the importance of ensuring that no reprisals occur against protest participants and highlighted the need for comprehensive security sector reform to prevent future abuses.

Encouraging Dialogue: Türk expressed hope that the Supreme Court’s decision to narrow the controversial quota system for government jobs—a key issue in the recent protests—might lead to confidence-building and inclusive dialogue. He appealed to all political actors to avoid incitement to violence and further crackdowns on dissent.

Human Rights and Reforms:

Abiding by Standards: The High Commissioner urged the Bangladesh Government to align law enforcement operations with international human rights norms, particularly regarding the policing of protests and the use of force. He warned that the current measures undermine public trust and could exacerbate the situation.

Volker Türk's statements underscore the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and adherence to human rights standards in the wake of the recent violence in Bangladesh.
