French prosecutors have launched an investigation into an alleged gang rape of a 25-year-old Australian woman visiting Paris, according to judicial authorities on Wednesday. This comes as the city finalizes preparations for the 2024 Olympics.
The Paris public prosecutor's office disclosed that the woman reported she was raped by a group of five men. The alleged incident occurred overnight on July 19. She sought refuge in a Paris restaurant, where firefighters provided emergency care before she was transported to a hospital.
Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that the Australian Embassy in Paris has extended consular assistance to the victim. While the department is ready to offer support, they are withholding further information to protect the woman's privacy.
Australian media indicated that the victim had initially planned to return home immediately but opted to stay in France. Authorities in Paris are on high alert in anticipation of the Olympic Games, deploying up to 45,000 police officers and 10,000 soldiers for security.
