The Delhi High Court has requested the city police's position on the bail plea of former Jawaharlal Nehru University student Umar Khalid, who faces charges under the UAPA related to the alleged conspiracy behind the February 2020 riots.
A bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Girish Kathpalia issued a notice to the Delhi Police, asking for a formal response to Khalid's bail application. The court has scheduled the hearing for August 29, alongside bail pleas from other co-accused, including Sharjeel Imam.
Khalid, arrested in September 2020, contests a trial court's recent decision denying his bail. He, along with others, is charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Indian Penal Code for allegedly orchestrating the riots, which resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries. The violence erupted amid protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens.
