Prime Minister Defends Curfew Amidst Deadly Clashes in Bangladesh
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina defended the curfew and shoot-on-sight order in Bangladesh following violent clashes between the police and protesters. The violence erupted due to the controversial quota system in government jobs. Hasina blamed the opposition and called for cooperation to aid affected low-income people.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday justified the enforcement of a curfew with a shoot-on-sight order following violent clashes between the police and protesters in Bangladesh. The tough measures, according to Hasina, were necessary to ensure the security of lives and properties.
Hasina's comments came a day after the Supreme Court of Bangladesh eliminated most of the quotas in government jobs, meeting a pivotal demand of the protesters. The resulting rallies marked one of the deadliest outbreaks of violence in the country for years.
Hasina further urged leaders and workers of her ruling Awami League, along with affluent societal sections, to assist the lower-income, poor, and working-class people during this crisis, state-run BSS news agency reported.
