Bangladesh Prime Minister Defends Curfew Amid Protests
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina defended the shoot-on-sight curfew in Bangladesh after violent clashes with protesters. The chaos followed the Supreme Court's reduction of government job quotas, sparking nationwide violence. Hasina called on her party to assist affected citizens, blaming opposition parties for the unrest.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday defended her decision to enforce a curfew with a shoot-on-sight order following violent clashes between police and protesters in Bangladesh. She emphasized that the tough measures were necessary to ensure the security of people's lives and property.
Hasina's comments came a day after Bangladesh's Supreme Court scrapped most quotas on government jobs, addressing a key demand of the protesters. This move has led to one of the most violent outbreaks in the country in recent years.
The Prime Minister called on leaders and workers of her party, the Awami League, as well as affluent sections of society, to aid the country's lower-income and working-class people. Violent clashes have reportedly resulted in over 100 deaths, although official figures are not available.
