The initial landslide in the Gofa zone buried several people. As locals and officials tried to rescue those trapped, a second landslide struck, engulfing the rescuers. The head of the National Disaster Response agency in Gofa Zone, Markos Melese, stated that search operations continue in the challenging terrain.
So far, 157 bodies have been recovered from two villages, and authorities expect the death toll to rise. Among the deceased are children and police officers.
