The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to former Union minister Ajay Mishra's son Ashish Mishra in connection with the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, which resulted in eight fatalities. The court imposed restrictions on his movement, limiting it to Delhi or Lucknow.
On January 25 last year, the apex court had initially given Ashish Mishra interim bail. Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan also extended bail to four farmers implicated in the incident and requested the trial court to speed up the hearing process.
The violence on October 3, 2021, in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district saw four farmers killed by a vehicle, which led to retaliatory attacks that killed a driver, two BJP workers, and a journalist. The Supreme Court emphasized the need to expedite the trial, noting that only seven out of 114 witnesses have been examined so far.
