Tens of thousands of workers at Disney's theme parks and resort properties in California have voted to authorize a potential strike, amid ongoing contract negotiations over wages, sick leave, and other benefits.

The strike authorization was overwhelmingly approved by nearly 99% of members who cast votes, according to a union statement. The vote was conducted by a coalition of four unions representing 14,000 workers including ride operators, store clerks, and custodians.

The authorization does not guarantee a strike, but gives union leaders the power to call one if a new contract deal cannot be reached with Disney. Negotiations are set to continue on Monday.

Disney stated, "We greatly appreciate the important roles our cast members play in creating memorable experiences for our guests, and we remain committed to reaching an agreement that focuses on what matters most to them while positioning Disneyland Resort for growth and job creation." Elizabeth Gonzalez, a day custodial cast member at Disney California Adventure, expressed concerns about colleagues struggling financially, stating, "I am worried as a future mom for the family I'm creating right now. Disney can't call themselves a family-friendly company while so many cast members and their families are struggling." Union members have been in discussions with Disney over issues such as wage increases and safety measures since April.
