The United Nations Human Rights office has voiced serious concerns over the 16-year prison sentence handed down to U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich in Russia, after his espionage conviction.

In a statement, the U.N. highlighted the necessity for journalists to work in a safe environment, free from retaliation, consistent with Russia's international human rights obligations. They stressed that journalists should be able to perform their essential duties without fear of reprisals.

The U.N. Human Rights Office has also called for the immediate release of all journalists in Russia who are detained solely for fulfilling their professional responsibilities.
