Americans Imprisoned in Russia: High-Profile Cases

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been sentenced to 16 years in a Russian prison on espionage charges. The U.S. government and his newspaper deny these allegations. Gershkovich is among several Americans imprisoned by Russia in recent years.
Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine, was arrested in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years for alleged espionage. In another case, Michael Travis Leake, a musician and ex-paratrooper, received a 13-year sentence for drug smuggling.
Other Americans imprisoned include Robert Romanov Woodland, sentenced to 12-1/2 years for drug-related charges, and Marc Fogel, serving a 14-year term for drug smuggling. Additional cases involve Gordon Black, Robert Gilman, Eugene Spector, and David Barnes.
