Americans Imprisoned in Russia: High-Profile Cases

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been sentenced to 16 years in a Russian prison on espionage charges. He is one of several Americans currently jailed in Russia. This list includes Paul Whelan, Michael Travis Leake, Robert Romanov Woodland, Marc Fogel, Gordon Black, Robert Gilman, Eugene Spector, and David Barnes.

Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine, was arrested in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years for alleged espionage. In another case, Michael Travis Leake, a musician and ex-paratrooper, received a 13-year sentence for drug smuggling.

Other Americans imprisoned include Robert Romanov Woodland, sentenced to 12-1/2 years for drug-related charges, and Marc Fogel, serving a 14-year term for drug smuggling. Additional cases involve Gordon Black, Robert Gilman, Eugene Spector, and David Barnes.
