Rare Mosque Attack in Oman Leaves Nine Dead Amid Ashura Observations

The gun attack also left 28 people of various nationalities wounded, including security personnel, as confirmed by both Pakistani and Omani officials. The attack unfolded at Ali bin Abi Talib mosque in Oman's capital, an important site for the Shi'ite community in the predominantly Sunni nation.

Pakistan's foreign ministry labeled the incident a 'terrorist' attack and reported that 30 injured individuals were receiving medical care. This tragic event coincided with Ashura, an annual period of mourning for Shi'ite Muslims commemorating the death of Hussein, the Prophet Mohammad's grandson. While Ashura can heighten sectarian tensions in some regions, Oman typically remains unaffected.

Authorities have yet to disclose any motives or announce arrests linked to the attack. 'We are heartened that the government of Oman has neutralized the attackers,' Pakistan's foreign ministry stated.

A video posted by Pakistan's embassy in Oman showed their ambassador visiting the injured in hospital. The U.S. embassy in Muscat also issued a statement advising American citizens to stay vigilant and follow local authorities' directions. The incident has drawn significant attention due to Oman's traditionally neutral stance in regional conflicts, such as those involving the United States and Iran.
