The Bombay High Court has affirmed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's right to a speedy trial concerning a 2014 defamation case, emphasizing the importance of Article 21 of the Constitution.

Justice Prithviraj Chavan noted in an order dated July 12 that a fair trial is essential. The court's remarks came while quashing a previous magistrate's order that permitted an RSS worker to submit fresh and additional documents against Gandhi.

This decision came in response to Gandhi's petition opposing the inclusion of these documents. The defamation complaint was originally filed by Rajesh Kunte, an RSS worker, alleging that Gandhi made defamatory statements linking the RSS to Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. The High Court has now directed the lower court to dispose of the long-pending case quickly.
