The Maharashtra government informed the Supreme Court on Monday that it will transfer 4.39 acres of land to the Bombay High Court for the construction of a new building by September 10.

The case, entitled 'Heritage Building of the Bombay High Court and allotment of additional lands for the High Court,' was initiated suo motu after an April 29 letter from Bombay Bar Association president Nitin Thakker and other bar leaders highlighted the urgent need for new accommodations for the court, which is 150 years old.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices B R Gavai and J B Pardiwala was informed that the remaining 30.46 acres will also be handed over to the high court within a stipulated timeline.
