A police team was attacked and its vehicle damaged by an angry mob while attempting to control a chaotic situation at a wedding in Mahjuda village, Varanasi, officials reported on Sunday.

Police have detained 11 individuals in connection with the incident that unfolded Saturday during a wedding procession originating from Chaubepur of Varanasi. The disturbance escalated as guests from both the bride and groom's sides, heavily intoxicated, began fighting and causing commotion.

Superintendent of Police Meenakshi Katyayan explained that the initial police team faced hostility when they tried to disperse the rowdy crowd. People started shouting that the police were beating them, which incited further anger and violence.

Three policemen, Radheshyam, Vikas, and Awadhesh Pathak, were attacked and forced to flee. Backup was called in, and a larger police force managed to regain control of the situation. The mob had severely damaged the police response vehicle and pelted stones at the officers.

An FIR naming 10 individuals and 40 unknowns was registered late Saturday night. By Sunday, authorities had apprehended 11 suspects, including three women, and continue efforts to arrest the remaining culprits.
