An Israeli airstrike killed at least 71 Palestinians in a designated humanitarian zone in Gaza on Saturday, according to the enclave's health ministry. The attack targeted Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, though it was unclear if he was killed. 'We are still checking and verifying the results of the strike,' an Israeli military official said.

Hamas denied that its leaders were targeted, labeling the Israeli claims as false and an attempt to justify the attack. Witnesses described the aftermath as devastating, with bodies and body parts scattered amid the rubble. 'I couldn't even tell where I was or what was happening,' said Sheikh Youssef, a displaced resident.

Rafa Salama, commander of Hamas' Khan Younis Brigade, was another target. At least 289 people were injured in the deadliest strike in weeks. The Al-Mawasi humanitarian area, recommended by the Israeli army for evacuation, became a scene of chaos. Ambulances rushed to the area, while displaced individuals fled carrying belongings.
