The Union law ministry has initiated the elevation process for Justices N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan to join the Supreme Court. Their appointments are expected to be finalized next week.

Informed sources indicate that the necessary paperwork is nearing completion.

Following their oath of office, the Supreme Court will restore its full strength of 34 judges, including the chief justice. Justice N Kotiswar Singh, currently leading the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, will be the first judge from Manipur to join the top court. Justice R Mahadevan is the acting chief justice of the Madras High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended their elevation on July 11.
