Five individuals have been taken into custody for their alleged involvement in the unlawful sale and purchase of a suspected radioactive device, police reported on Friday.

Authorities apprehended two suspects in Dehradun's Rajpur area, two in Madhya Pradesh, and one in Delhi.

The suspects face charges under various legal provisions for possession and purchase of a life-endangering substance. A radiography camera was found in their possession.

According to police, one suspect revealed that he had acquired the device 10 months prior from a resident of Saharanpur and was planning its sale in Dehradun.

Police sealed a flat in the Brook and Woods Society on Rajpur Road, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was called to investigate.

SDRF confirmed the presence of radioactive material at the location.

Officials stated the seized device was BARC-made and typically used in medicine and for preventing pipeline leaks.

Given the situation's sensitivity, an emergency team from the Narora atomic power station in Uttar Pradesh arrived in Dehradun and conducted a four- to five-hour test on the device.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh announced the device would be sent to BARC for further analysis.
