A Hyderabad policeman opened fire in self-defense during a nighttime patrol, injuring one of two suspected anti-social elements attacking him with an axe, police confirmed on Friday.

The incident occurred around 12:10 am near the Nampally railway station when a decoy operation was underway. One suspect wielded an axe and the other pelted stones at the officers.

Despite warnings, the suspects persisted, prompting the constable to open fire. The injured individual was taken to Osmania General Hospital. Both suspects were later apprehended and admitted to pickpocketing before a case was registered against them.
