Four migrants have tragically died while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the UK on an inflatable boat, French authorities confirmed on Friday.

The vessel, carrying the migrants, capsized off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France. The French coast guard managed to rescue 63 individuals from the water.

A French navy patrol boat initially spotted the overburdened vessel early on Friday as it deflated near the French coast. Some migrants were found drifting in the water, while others clung to the damaged dinghy.

The rescue operation involved navy vessels, a fishing boat, and a Navy helicopter. Survivors were transported to Boulogne for medical care and temporary shelter.

Migrants often risk their lives to cross the treacherous English Channel, commonly using crowded, unseaworthy boats.

French maritime officials highlighted the numerous dangers of such crossings, given the channel's heavy traffic of over 600 commercial ships daily and frequent severe weather conditions.

Notably, the latest figures show continued migration attempts. Britain's Home Office reported that 62 individuals crossed the Channel in one boat on Thursday alone, bringing the 2024 total to 14,120.

In response, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper introduced a Border Security Command to tackle people-smuggling operations. However, a commander for this new division has yet to be appointed.

"The further loss of life in the Channel is truly awful. My thoughts are with all those affected," Cooper wrote.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Nigel Farage from Reform UK demanded swift action from the new government.

Previous rescue attempts have also been notable, with 80 migrants saved last month after a boat experienced difficulties during a similar crossing attempt. Reports indicate around 30,000 people undertook this bleak journey in 2023.
