The Supreme Court has expressed severe disappointment with Delhi authorities over their handling of illegal tree felling in the ridge area. The court ordered the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to clarify whether the decision to cut trees was based on oral permission from LG V K Saxena or taken independently by the agency.
The court was hearing contempt proceedings against the DDA's vice-chairman for allegedly allowing the illegal felling of 1,100 trees. It criticized the lack of transparency and accountability, noting that there was a significant non-application of mind by the Delhi LG in granting permission for the tree felling.
The court also held the Delhi government accountable, directing them to devise a mechanism to compensate for the illegal act and to file an affidavit detailing on whose order the tree logs were seized. The bench emphasized the need for constant surveillance to prevent further illegal tree felling activities.
