West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Tuesday strongly criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government, holding it accountable for a series of violent incidents claiming several lives.

Alleging the state has become unsafe for women, Bose visited North Bengal to meet victims of these atrocities and canceled an earlier planned visit to Chopra.

''These incidents are occurring with the leadership, support, and patronage of the state government,'' Bose said, after meeting victims in Siliguri. ''Bengal is no longer safe for women,'' he added.

Bose, who flew to New Delhi, is expected to submit a report to the central government. He condemned the government's failure to act against violence since last year's panchayat elections.

He accused the government of appeasing people with money and fostering violence, stating, ''An ugly situation has developed in Bengal. It must end now and here.''

Asked why he bypassed visiting the assaulted couple in Chopra, Bose said, ''She requested a private meeting at Raj Bhavan. The victim can meet me anywhere.''

Bose questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's role, particularly as state police minister, for not providing a report on the Chopra incident.

''It's my Constitutional duty, and the CM should comply timely. But that hasn't happened. The CM is creating a constitutional hurdle. I'm serious; necessary action will be taken,'' he warned.

Governor Bose filed a defamation case against Banerjee on June 28 following her allegations against Raj Bhavan, citing his self-respect.

Officials indicated that the couple flogged in Chopra by local Trinamool Congress leader Tajemul Islam, recently arrested, didn't attend the meeting.

A victim from Cooch Behar claimed, ''I have narrated the whole incident to the governor. He assured me of justice since I have no faith in Bengal Police.''
