A 65-year-old man allegedly involved in the infamous 1993 Mumbai riots has been apprehended after being on the run for 31 years, authorities reported on Tuesday.

Sayyad Nadir Shah Abbas Khan was captured in the Sewri area by a dedicated team from the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg police station on Monday, an official disclosed.

Khan was originally accused of attempt to murder and unlawful assembly amidst the riots that erupted in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition in December 1992. Despite being initially arrested and obtaining bail, he subsequently disappeared and failed to attend court hearings, leading to a non-bailable warrant being issued for his arrest.

Repeated visits to his Sewri residence yielded no results until investigators traced his location through the mobile phone records of his relatives. On June 29, police received intelligence that Khan planned to visit his home, facilitating his capture through a strategic operation.

Khan has now been re-arrested in connection with the 1993 case, and further investigations are underway, the official added.
