The family of Agniveer Akshay Gawate, who died in the line of duty last year, has been granted an assistance package of Rs 1.08 crore from the government.

The announcement comes in the wake of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's statement that every Agniveer who sacrifices their life in service is eligible for Rs 1 crore in compensation. This statement was made in response to criticism from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who claimed the Agniveers are treated poorly under the Agnipath military recruitment scheme and are not even acknowledged as martyrs.

Akshay Gawate, a native of Pimpalgaon Sarai in Maharashtra's Buldhana district, tragically lost his life while on duty in Siachen on October 21, 2023. Speaking to reporters, Gawate's father, Lakshman Gawate, detailed the breakdown of the compensation, including Rs 48 lakh in insurance, Rs 50 lakh from the central government, and Rs 10 lakh from the state government. He also called for a government job to be given to Akshay's sister.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced on June 14, 2022, aims to recruit youths aged 17-and-half to 21 years for a four-year term, with a chance to retain 25 percent for an additional 15 years. The upper age limit was later increased to 23 years.
