In a landmark move, Gujarat Police filed the first FIR under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at 1 AM on Monday, targeting a motorcyclist accused of obstructing a public road at Chiloda circle near Gandhinagar. The new legislation aims to tighten law enforcement across India.
According to Deputy Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Meghani, since midnight, authorities have registered 164 cases under the BNS. This marks a significant shift in the legal landscape, as the BNS was implemented alongside two other new criminal laws—the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
Police Inspector AS Asari explained that the first FIR under the BNS was lodged at Chiloda police station one hour after the law took effect. The motorcyclist, who was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for obstructing traffic, was cited under Section 285, which addresses dangers or obstructions in public spaces. He was subsequently released on bail.
