Social Development and Employment Minister Louise Upston has announced that Civil Defence payments are now available to assist individuals affected by the severe weather in Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti. These payments aim to cover emergency costs for those impacted by the recent weather events.

“We want to ensure that communities struggling due to the latest severe weather event receive as much support as possible,” said Minister Upston.

Starting today, residents of Wairoa, Te Karaka, or Haumoana who have been impacted by the severe weather may be eligible for assistance to cover costs related to food, bedding, and clothing.

“You don’t have to be on a benefit to qualify for a Civil Defence payment, and non-residents in these areas may also be eligible,” added Upston.

Individuals seeking to apply for assistance are encouraged to speak with someone from their local welfare team at a Civil Defence centre or to call MSD’s general enquiries team at 0800 559 009.

“The local welfare team will be assisting people displaced by the weather over the long weekend and will connect them to MSD staff as needed,” Upston noted.

These payments are part of the Government’s effort to provide immediate relief to those facing hardships due to the severe weather, ensuring that basic needs such as food and clothing are met during this challenging time.
