Mian Qayoom, the former president of the Kashmir Bar Association, was taken into custody on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in the murder of advocate Babar Qadri in 2020, according to officials.
Babar Qadri, who also featured as a panellist on TV news channels, was shot dead at his home in the Hawal area of Srinagar in September 2020. "Qayoom has been identified as the key conspirator behind Qadri's killing during the investigation," an official revealed.
Qayoom, the father-in-law of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court judge Javed Iqbal Wani, is being interrogated as the State Investigation Agency (SIA) continues its thorough probe. In August, police conducted searches at the homes of Qayoom and two other lawyers, seizing digital devices, bank statements, and documents. The SIA has offered a Rs 10 lakh reward for information leading to the killers. Previously, authorities stated that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Saqib Manzoor, who died in an encounter in August 2021, was involved in the killing.
